We’re here to guide you! We believe great care starts with honest answers and open conversations. Check out these FAQs about orthodontic treatment, and if you don’t see your question listed below, feel free to call or text us! We’re always happy to help. What are my treatment options? At Canales Orthodontics, we provide Invisalign® and Spark clear aligners for all ages, as well as custom KLOwen braces with each bracket custom-designed for each tooth. Choose between clear braces or metal braces to suit your style. On your first visit to our office, or during your virtual consultation, we can help you decide which treatment option is the best match for you. When should my child come in for their first orthodontic exam? The AAO advises that children receive their first orthodontic screening by age 7. Early screenings are essential for detecting problematic orthodontic conditions before they progress. However, not every child needs orthodontics at age 7, and we’ll never suggest unnecessary treatment. We take a conservative approach, only recommending the right treatment at the right time for each patient. Most of our young patients start with observation only! Every smile grows at its own pace, and we’re here to give you an expert, honest opinion only. Do I need a referral from my dentist, to visit an orthodontist? No referral necessary! While many patients are referred by their family dentist, a referral is not required to make your appointment. We welcome you to schedule your own complimentary consultation with us. Is orthodontic treatment necessary? Not every person needs orthodontic treatment, but those who do can experience a significant and permanent improvement in their quality of life. The alignment of your teeth and jaws impacts most aspects of your life, from your facial appearance and self-confidence, to your chewing and breathing functions. The benefits of orthodontics go far beyond a beautiful smile (but a beautiful smile is a life-changing benefit too! ) But no matter where you are in your journey, whether it’s your first opinion or second, you’ll receive a transparent, expert recommendation from our doctors. We’re known for giving our patients thoughtful guidance, and never rushing into treatment nor focusing on “sales”. Your best interest is our best interest. How often are Invisalign appointments, or braces appointments? The frequency of your appointments will depend on your personalized treatment plan. As much as we’d love to see you every 4 weeks, we know that you’re busy! We use advanced technologies and treatments to reduce office visits and make your experience as convenient and easy as possible. With virtual care through DentalMonitoring, you can complete regular check-ins through the secured app on your phone, sending photo updates of your smile so we can assess your progress remotely. We monitor your progress between visits and reduce office visits to every 6 to 8 weeks, or 8 to 10 weeks, depending on your treatment plan. We will review your photos and get back to you with next steps --- - Published: 2025-07-30 - Modified: 2025-08-11 - URL: https://canalesorthodontics.com/emergency-orthodontist/ Comfort Care What to Do in Case of an Orthodontic Emergency Call our office as soon as possible if you break or loosen any of your appliances. Please do not come directly to the office – by calling us, you will allow us to create a time to see you. Even if you have a regular appointment scheduled, call us immediately to notify us if you need an appliance repaired. If you’re calling after hours, you’ll be directed to our emergency line option in our voicemail message. What is considered an orthodontic emergency? Fortunately, most braces emergencies can be resolved with orthodontic wax and/or a visit to our office. Please give us a call if you experience any of the following: Lost, cracked or broken clear aligners or appliances Lost or broken appliance Rubber band comes off your braces Archwire pops out of place Loose or broken braces bracket Soreness due to poking wires or metal pieces Tooth pain or soreness In the meantime, we have tips to make you more comfortable until you can visit us. Loose Braces Brackets or Bands If you have a loose or floating bracket on braces, give us a call right away for advice. The bracket may need to be re-fitted as soon as possible. You may have a situation that requires cutting a wire or sliding a bracket off a wire at night or over the weekend, and we’ll be here to guide you through it. If you need to cut a wire in case of emergency, you may use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. Please call our office the next business day, so that we may schedule an appointment for you. Wire Irritations or Poking Braces Wires How to fix a poking wire on braces: Sometimes discomfort caused by a wire on your braces can be resolved by moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or eraser. If the wire will not move, try covering the end of it with a small piece of cotton or a small amount of wax. If the wire is painful, you can cut it with nail clippers or scissors that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. If you cannot resolve the wire irritation, call our office for an appointment. Lost Separators Separators are placed between back teeth to create space before placing bands. They may come out after enough room is made. Do not worry about losing a separator, but call our office to see if it needs to be replaced. Discomfort with Orthodontic Treatment During the first week with braces, and after routine adjustments are complete, you will likely feel some pain, soreness or discomfort. Here’s what you can do:You may take acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers while you adjust to your new braces. A warm wash cloth or heating pad may reduce the soreness in your jaws. You can also gargle some salt water for relief. Mix one teaspoon of salt into... --- - Published: 2025-07-30 - Modified: 2025-08-12 - URL: https://canalesorthodontics.com/orthodontic-treatment-common-issues/ Common Orthodontic Issues Crowded teeth, gaps, or bite concerns may look familiar to us, but your smile and your story are entirely your own. When you visit us for a complimentary consultation, Dr. Chris or Dr. Angie will examine your smile, clearly explain the underlying issue, and outline honest, no-pressure solutions that fit your goals and lifestyle. Most conditions can be treated with clear aligners, braces, and/or an orthodontic appliance. Crowded Teeth Teeth that are overlapping are considered ‘crowded’. More often than not, crowding is the result of insufficient room in the mouth. When the jaws aren’t wide enough to fit all teeth, teeth start overlapping each other as they’re emerging. In some cases, crowded teeth can be prevented with a palatal expander appliance during childhood, while the jaws are still developing. Spacing Issues It’s normal to have some spaces between primary teeth. However, significant gaps or spaces in children, teens or adults may result from having excess room in the jaws, congenitally missing teeth (missing certain teeth at birth), cavities or trauma, or certain childhood habits (like thumbsucking). Underbite With an underbite, the lower jaw extends further than the upper jaw. This condition can cause facial imbalances, pain or difficulty when chewing and speaking, and can cause teeth to wear down prematurely due to not meeting evenly. Excessive Overbite When the upper jaw extends further than the lower jaw, this is called an overbite. Depending on how severe the condition is, an overbite can cause jaw pain, difficulty eating and chewing, and speech issues. In some cases, the lower teeth will meet the roof of the mouth - ouch! Crossbite When the upper teeth are positioned inside the lower teeth, this is called a crossbite. This may be a posterior crossbite (in the back of the mouth) or an anterior crossbite (toward the front of the mouth). Crossbites can affect individual teeth or multiple teeth in a row. This condition may result from irregular tooth eruption, late loss of baby teeth, or thumbsucking during childhood. It can also occur due to a mismatch in the size of the upper and lower jaws. Open Bite If some of the top teeth don’t meet or overlap with the bottom teeth when the mouth is closed, this is called an open bite. (With a healthy alignment, the top teeth overlap the bottom teeth slightly. )An open bite may be the result of skeletal development problems and/or childhood habits, like thumbsucking and tongue-thrusting. It can be extremely challenging to chew food properly and pronounce certain words with an open bite, and the facial structure is typically affected by this condition. Protrusion Protrusion occurs when the front teeth protrude outward more than normal. Commonly called “buck teeth”, this situation often results from thumbsucking, an underdeveloped lower jaw. or insufficient jaw size to fit all the teeth. --- - Published: 2025-07-30 - Modified: 2025-08-05 - URL: https://canalesorthodontics.com/retainers/ Retainers Unlock Your Forever Smile After all of the hard work you put into your beautiful new smile, you’ll want it to last a lifetime! That’s where your retainers come in. What does a retainer do? Teeth have a natural tendency to shift throughout life, and without the support of your retainers, that’s exactly what they’ll do. Wearing your retainers consistently is necessary for holding your teeth in their new positions and preserving your smile’s beautiful new alignment for decades to come. Our Retainer Bundle Program Your retainers are in it for the long haul with you, and that means they’re susceptible to life’s mishaps: getting lost, broken, worn down, or ending up in your pup’s mouth! (Pets love retainers. ) Your first set of retainers is included in your treatment cost, but if you lose or damage your retainers, there will be a replacement fee. That’s why we created the Retainer Bundle Program — your peace-of-mind solution for protecting your investment and maintaining your beautiful smile for years to come. Our Retainer Bundle Program ensures that if you lose your retainers, you’ll have a back-up on hand and won’t have to stress about ordering replacement retainers or paying full price. Protecting your smile is Easy Enroll in our program for a one-time payment of just $500 — or two easy payments of $250. This saves you over $200 in replacement retainer fees! Receive two additional sets of clear retainers, plus one set of virtual or 3D printed models of your smile (which you can use to order more replacement retainers in the future, without having to pay for more scans. ) If you need more replacement retainers in the future, you’ll get a $50 discount on our standard replacement fee. Types of Retainers There are two types of retainers, removable retainers and fixed retainers. Removable retainers are made of transparent high-quality plastic, similar to clear aligners. Clear retainers are custom-designed to fit your teeth snugly, and they come in sets, with one retainer for the top teeth and one for the bottom. These retainers can be taken out, cleaned, soaked and placed back in as needed. Fixed retainers or permanent retainers, are bonded (glued) to your teeth and cannot be removed without your orthodontist. These retainers include a small metal wire, custom-designed to fit behind the teeth. They’re generally bonded to the back surface of the bottom teeth, but can also be used behind the top teeth depending on your case. How much does a retainer cost? As you now know, your initial set of retainers will be included in your orthodontic treatment cost, but if you happen to lose or break your retainer, there will be a replacement fee. This is what makes our Retainer Bundle Program so valuable. With our program, you’ll be saving $200 on your replacement retainers cost. If your retainers get lost or broken and you don’t have back-up retainers through our program, it’s important that you reach out to us as soon as... --- - Published: 2025-07-29 - Modified: 2025-08-12 - URL: https://canalesorthodontics.com/invisalign/ Clear Aligners for All Ages Take the clear path to a confident smile with board-certified orthodontists, Drs. The Best experience ever! ! Office staff and Doctor were welcoming and informative and extremely kind! ! Dr. Angie Canales was very thorough and took so much time explaining my treatment plan and made sure I understood everything and answering all questions! She made me feel comfortable and very informed! I highly recommend Canales Orthodontics for your entire family's needs! -Janet B. They have been so great to work with while my son has had braces and they have also supported him and his school in their sports programs. His course was exactly as they said it would be. This is an awesome group of people with great communication! They're so great they're fitting me at 43 for lnvisalign and have calmed my nerves! Great experience, no pressure or feeling like you're being pushed to get unnecessary treatment. Would highly recommend. -Brandy C. All staff were kind and professional. They were very responsive. Most importantly, they were focused on the HEALTH and wellbeing of my son rather than trying to merely make money. They didn't recommend intervention even though it would have been very profitable for them, but unnecessary for us. They were my choice for getting a second opinion from someone who recommended intervention (for cosmetic purposes only), knowing that it would have to be repeated later when his permanent teeth come in. -Lauren S. They are friendly, professional and very qualified. I highly recommend Canales Orthodontics. They are the best. They care for their patients. They work with the families to ensure your child has the best orthodontist care possible. You know from the very beginning what your Financial investment will be. They have several different payment options for you to choose from. Very affordable. I give them 5 Stars. Thank you Canales. -Dena Long Bond Best experience! ! ! The staff is polite and attentive. Everyone was very thorough, Dr. A. surprised me by saying we could wait to start. She explained why and that it was actually better for my son. She did this for my daughter as well, but i thought for sure my son would need to get started as he is missing some permanent teeth and others are crowding in the space. I love the honesty! ! ! The whole office from the lobby to the very back is super clean. We were greeted as soon as we arrived and taken back within minutes. My son was excited and enjoyed talking to the staff and Dr. A. We believe early care should be thoughtful and personalized, never rushed. As Gardendale and Alabaster’s trusted children’s orthodontists, we take a conservative approach and only recommend treatment when it’s truly needed. We’ll always explain why we recommend treatment, and when we think the right time to get started will be, so you can make the best decision for your little one. Whether your child is just getting their first permanent teeth or you’ve been told they need braces now, we’ll give you honest guidance and clear answers, backed by board-certified expertise. When should my child see an orthodontist? The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), along with our board-certified doctors, recommends that children have their first orthodontic check-up at age 7, or earlier if issues are apparent. Age 7 is generally the prime time for us to detect growth concerns in the jaws, identify problematic conditions that are about to emerge, and create a plan to gently intercept these issues before they progress. That said, every smile grows at its own pace, and Drs. Angie and Chris take the time to assess what’s best for your child. Here, most kids don’t start treatment right away, because we only move forward when the timing is right. Hear from Parents Like You Benefits of Interceptive Orthodontics Children’s mouths may be small, but their orthodontic needs are complex! Early orthodontic treatment, also called interceptive orthodontics, allows us to address developing issues in a more natural and efficient way, while your child’s jaw and facial bones are still growing. By guiding jaw development at the right time, we can often prevent severe bite misalignments and reduce the need for more complex treatment (like jaw surgery or tooth extractions. )Interceptive orthodontics for kids can help:Guide jaw growth and alignment while bones are still developingReduce or eliminate the need for extractions or jaw surgery laterCreate space for permanent teeth to erupt properlyShorten or simplify future treatment (Phase II)Prevent crowding, crossbites, overbites, and other bite problemsImprove facial balance and overall oral healthBoost your child’s comfort, confidence, and self-esteem early on Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment In some cases, orthodontic treatment is recommended in two phases, timed to align with your child’s natural growth and development. While we do two-phase orthodontics when necessary, our conservative approach often allows us to treat most patients with just one well-timed phase of care. Phase One Orthodontics Phase I typically begins between ages 7 and 10, while your child still has some primary (baby) teeth. The goal of this phase is to take a preventive or interceptive approach, stopping problems from developing, correcting issues early, or guiding jaw growth to support healthy development. Treatment during this early phase may include an orthodontic appliance, such as a palatal expander, to create space, correct tooth alignment, and/or influence jaw position. Phase Two Orthodontics Phase II is what... --- - Published: 2025-07-22 - Modified: 2025-08-11 - URL: https://canalesorthodontics.com/orthodontic-treatment-options/ Orthodontic Treatment Options Drs. My family has used Dr Angie and Chris for the past 4 years, and would highly recommend their services to anyone who would like to be treated like family. They truly care for the patient and the extended family as well. If you are evaluating orthodontic care, you would be wise to visit a Canales Orthodontic location near you. "- Olivia C. It’s about trusting someone with your smile, your health, and your family’s comfort. At Canales Orthodontics, we treat every patient the way we’d want our own loved ones to be treated. We take our time, get to know you, and recommend treatment only when it’s truly needed. From your very first visit, you’ll feel the difference: no pressure, no gimmicks, just honest care and thoughtful guidance from a team who truly cares. Privately Owned + Patient First Since 2013, we’ve been a family-owned, veteran-owned, female-led practice — and proudly remain independent today. That independence means every decision we make is guided by what’s right for you, not a bottom line, and you’ll see the same doctors throughout your journey. We believe in building real relationships, providing consistent care, running on time and minimizing wait times, and making every visit feel warm, welcoming, and stress-free. Our patients often say they feel like part of the family here, and that’s exactly how we want it to be. Only the Right Care, at the Right Time Not every child needs braces at age 7, and we’ll be the first to tell you that. Drs. Angie and Chris take a conservative approach to care, especially when it comes to early orthodontics. Most of our younger patients begin with observation only, and we’ll never recommend treatment that isn’t truly necessary. No matter where you are in your journey, whether it’s your first opinion or second, you’ll receive a transparent, expert recommendation rooted in what’s best for your family. That’s the Canales promise. Expertise You Can Trust You’ll receive the highest standard of care here! Drs. Angie and Chris prioritize ABO Board Certification and continuing education, and use state-of-the-art digital technology in every treatment plan. We stay at the forefront of modern orthodontics, offering fully-customized appliances, custom braces and clear aligners, virtual treatment monitoring to track your progress remotely, and virtual consultations to make your experience as easy as possible. When you combine deep expertise with advanced technologies and a team who treats you like family, you get the kind of experience that makes you smile. That’s what we’re all about!
